Policy should clearly identify that SRI recognizes ESP research is controversial and that SRI feels it is important to provide the correct environment to conduct controversial research. 2. Policy should clearly delineate the way in which SRI will manage the research, using the existing line organization as much as possible, supplemented by an inside review committee. 3. Policy should clearly define the responsibilities of the research staff involved in ESP research (if different than for other research) regarding (a) responsibility to the clients (b) responsibili.ty to their management (c) responsibility to review committee W relationship to the public'and the media. 4. Policy should protect the ESP research staff from excessive internal scrutiny, harassment and approvals from all levels of SRI's management, and therefore allow the research staff the professional fredom to conduct their research in a professional and quality fashion. 5. Policy should define, in detail, the way in which SRI plans to handle all publicity of the work OK: (a) publications in scientific journals (b) verbal presentations at bonafide scientific organization symposia (c) seminars at internal SRI functions. Not OK: (a) interviews with press (b) visits by press or other not professional personnel W press releases on the work. The policy should be furnished to outside SRI activities, as requested, to demonstrate the responsible way in which SRI is conducti.ng this research.
