on Perceptual Augaentation
1. Because you have expressed an interest, as a
Directorate, In the subject of parapsycholo#y, I would like
to outline our current research plans in this area.
2. As you may know, we elected not to continue the SRI
Misarch project because of its substantial cost and because
of the generally negative findings In the Physiological por-
tion of the research. For example, a promising earlier car-
relation between brain way* patterns and the on-off status
of a hidden light inside a screen room was not substantiated
by the most recent stud The operationally oriented portion
of the SRI work did yiold sea* very Interesting findin gs.
Uftftrtunately, these were open to question because of pro-
cedur*1 shortcomings. such as the lack of controls, lack of
prodetoraUed criteria for "hits," failure to follow accepted
double bliA4 methodology, and the luvolveisont of experimental
two sombors themselves as subjects.
S. W# do agree that the field requires close observation,
however, untit we can identify onising and potentially use-
ftl research alternativeso We Foy* programed a significant
survey project for PY-77 anJ & follow-on for PY-7$. Th*
FY-77 vort will include an in-depth review of the "cent
lit*rature,, together with visits to laboratories doing sig-
nificimt, research in the field. The contrutor will be a
repu able scientist who holds neither a position of flat
rol#ctlon nor an outright *spousal of paranorual phenomena
