MEMORANDUM FOR: Major O'Keefe 1 June 1981
SUBJECT: Location of UF1-lH
The following information was acquired -through debriefing of an undeveloped
source concerning the location of a missing U11-11i helicopter. Source was
first debriefed on 27 March 1981 and subsequently on 30 May 1981.
1. Source states that from an unidentified town with an old Spanish mission
and buildings with facades, looking in a northerly direction, there can be
seen a loaf-shaped hill/mountain (see sketches 1 and 2, dated 27 Mar 81).
Beyond this loaf-shaped mountain is an east-west valley with possibly a
crock running through it (see sketch 2, dated 30 May 81). On the north side
of this valley is a higher mountain. Source feels that the crash site is
located an the southern slope of this larger mountain, approximately 400-500
yards up the slope from the floor of the valley (see sketch 2, dated 30 May 81).
2. Source feels that there may be, or may have been an Indian village
located 3-4 miles west of the crash site, near the source of the creek that
runs through the valley. There may be several huts or shacks at this location.
Source is not sure if this village can be spotted from the air (see sketch 2,
dated 30 May 81).
3. Source was asked if he was familiar with a geographical landmark known as
"Piedra Blanca". He felt thaL it might be located somewhere northwest of the
crash site, but could not be sure. Also in a northwesterly direction from
the crash site (approximately 3100 true) he seemed to recall something about
a tower, possibly a microwave tower (see sketch 2, dated 30 May 81).
4. Source was asked if there were any unique terrain features associated
with the crash site. fie stated that there appeared to be a linear "cut" in
the pattern of the trees, running parallel to the base of the mountain. lie
feels that this "cut" may be caused by a flat ridge or a specific contour
peculiar to the slope of this mountain. Source estimates that the crash site
is located at approximately this level on the Mountainside. (See sketch 1,
dated 30 May 81 and artist cutaway concept).
5. Source appears to have difficulty in judging distances. The estimated
distance between points of reference obtained during this debriefing did not
coincide with the debriefing conducted on 27 March 1981. On 27 March 1981,
source estimated the distance between the crash site and the town to be app-
roximately 18 miles (see sketch 2, dated 27 March 1981). During subsequent
debriefing on 20 May 1981, Source estimated the same distance to be approxi-
mately 9 kilometers (see sketch 2, dated 30 May 1981). However, source's
spatial relationships between all noted -terrain features remain consistant re-
gardless of assigned values.
