As, usual, 052's drawings contained much more information than the written words-perceptors. I am continuing to encourage 0512 to draw whenever possible, and possible methods for increasing sensitivity to the information cantai-ned in the drawings. This is not a standard portion of the CIRV training, but should be written into the training, for a great deal of I infor-matioi-i can be gained from the drawings a viewer mat.-:es, and is often lost to the viewer', simply for lack of having learned a way to break it out. 032 to have little trouble probirig the drawings for in+orffii-ftion. The site is structures. There is something round, curved, pointed, horizontal, and long turning into a diagonal. It is wide, shiny, dark, cold, closed-in and curved. There is a higher area and a lower area. The lower area has something round sitting in something soft which is curved to fit the round thing. Outside of the structure is a sickening taste. Inside the structure makes me want to sneeze and it feels hot on my face. There is water at the site and dripping water sounds. There is green, blue and black at the site. There may be red at the site. There are jelly-bean shapes at the site. The crossing was built with tunnels rather than above water to ensure that the U.S. Navy and commercial ships would have clear channels into and out of the Chesapeake Bay even if the crossings were bombed in time of war. The 2 concrete lined tunnels each 24 feet in diameter and I mile long carry the roadway deep beneath the main channel for ships. The ends of the tunnel are connected to man made islands 1500 feet long; the four islands were built in water with an average depth of 40 feet. Other parts of the crossing are provided by 2 steel bridges. The high level North Channel Bridge has a vertical clearance of 80 feet and a horizontal clearance of 300 feet for a clear channel. The medium-level Fishers' Inlet Bridge crosses a channel near Cape Charles. The major length of the crossing is provided by 12.5 miles of precast concrete pile trestles carrying the 31 foot wide roadway, 25 feet above mean low water; the trestles were designed to withstand 20 foot waves from Atlantic storms. The tunnel, eliminating an 85 minute ferry trip, was opened for traffic in 1964.
