'Approved For Release c0 6-00788R001 100400 017-1 -77 DEFENSE INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WASHINGTON. D.C. 20301 General Defense Intelligence Programs S-070/DG Mr. Robert R. Simmons Staff Director Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Room G308, Dirksen Building Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Rob: 14 April 1982 (U) Following up our conversation yesterday, we hay arranged to take up to six Committee members and staff on Friday, 7 April, to visit Army's GRILL FLAME facility at Fort Meade. If you agree, they will be met at the Dirksen Building at 0900 and should be back by 1330. The facility will hold only a limited number of visitors comfortably. If more than six would like to go, we'll arrange another trip. (S) GRILL FLAME will be an authorization conference item. Although the resources are not large, the substantive implications are. We need to complete the evaluation to make informed judgements about the foreign intelligence threat, countermeasures that can and should be developed, and the phenomenon's operational potential. (U) The main sticking points seem to be the intelligence implications -- whether the GRILL FLAME evaluation is worth completing and whether it should be done by the Intelligence Community. Much of the concern should be laid to rest by the Fort Meade trip. Please let me know by noon Thursday who will go.
