SUBJECT: SUN STREAK Operational Report - 8712 (U) 1. (SINFISK) During the period of 31 August 1987 through 2 September 1987 inclusively, seven sessions were conducted by four remote viewers against Project 8712. Results are substantially as follows: a. (SINFISK) The first three weeks in September 1987 were identified as periods of heightened military activity as a result of the presence of US-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. b. (S/NF/SK) The period of 20 September 1987 was described as a period of lessened military activity for the US forces in the area; howev,~r, there was a perception of increased (anti-US) manifestations and demonstrations (by Iran). C. (S/NF/SK) Source 011 and Source 079 labeled the week of 12 September as a period of enhanced military-related activity by US forces in the Persian Gulf area. d. (S/NF/SK) Source 003 reported a perceived, preemptive US military strike conducted against Iranian land-based targets on or about 6 September 1987. e. (S/NF/SK) Source 018 perceived an oil slick on fire with billowing smoke in "absolutely -smooth waters" close to land, in the Strait of Hormuz during the week of 16 September 1987. This incident is related to the presence of US-flagged vessels. 018 provided no further details. (SINFISK) Source 079 described the firing of a projectile against a land-ba'sed (Iranian) miiitary target in the Strait of Hormuz. g. (S/NF/SK) Source 011 perceived minor damages sustained by a "black dark gray, red" US-flagged vessels as a result of a projectile assumedly launched from a land-based (Iranian) battery. 2. (S/NF/SK) COMMENTS: Sources reached a consensus on the perceived probability of military activity related to US-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The activity is perceived as occurring in September 1987. There was a conspicuous absence of correlation among sources describing individual, isolated incidents devoid of mutual corroboration. 3. (S/NF/SK) No further foreign intelligence collection activity will be pursued Project 8712 unless or until additional specific requirements or intelligence gaps are identified and levied for action.
