Lee stands atop a 60-foot column in Lee Circle. i..,,ee Stands M* New'Orleans Iven in a city of monuments, the memo- rial dedicated to Robert E. Lee stands out in New Orleans. Atop a 60-foot marble column, the ',tiltLIC, Which is dramatically lighted at depicts Lee standing with arms folded, looking out over the city. The statue that anchors Lee Circle is I it familiar landmark to local residents. At exander Doyle, a young sculptor from Ncw York, designed the monument. The ~ ~ figure of Lee is 16V2 feet tall and Weighs 7,000 pounds. Doyle also did the cm S memorial for General Beauregard, thc "Great Creole" of the Civil War who ga% c the command to fire on Fort Sumter. Before the Lee memorial was erected, Lee Circle was called Tivoli Circle, and it was, originally planned to be a garden sur- munded by a canal. The circle was one of :h,_ local points of a plan devised in the early 1800's by Barthelemy Lafon for the area now called the Lower Garden Dis- tTict.
