In 22 BC they were removed by order of the Roman Emporer Augustus to Alexandria, where they remained until the middle of the 19th century AD. The London obelisk was offered to King George IV of Britian by Mehmet Ali, viceroy of Egypt, in 1820 and was actually set up on the victoria embankment of the Thames river in 1878. The NY obelisk was a gift of the Khedive Ismail Pasha to the city of New York and was erected in Central Park in 1881. Each of these two obelisks is a monolithic shaft of Aswan granite nearly 70 feet tall (21 meters) and tapering from an almost square base 7.5 feet (2 meters) in a side. The weight of the New York obelisk is about 224 tons. -(The London obelisk now measures and weighs somewhat less than it's "twin" because it is more severely weathered and chipped having lain on the ground for some time after the 12th century AD until iEs removal to London. Each side of the shaft bears three columns of hierographs, the central column in each case is the original iryscription of Thutmose III giving his official names and telling of his devotion to the gods of Heliopolis. The flanking columns were added by Ramseses 11 in the 12th century BC. In antiquity the pyramidions at the top were covered with electrum to catch and reflect the first and the last rays of the rising and setting sun. These obelisk.s were produced 1500 years before Cleopatra came- into reign and were also called MISALLAH, or literally the Great Needles by ancient arabic writers. Another name was the Pharaoh's Needles. 5_1 '0 3 6 "Al 0,57- "Al ~/,O 6 A6_ 11V -71r,0 &CP / /..W .7 ep hl Approved For Release 2000/08/08: CIA-RDP96-00789ROO1400260001-8
