 1. Because you have expressed an intercst, as a
 Directorate, in V.-W subjoct of pa-rapsychology, 1 would liko
 to outline our current research plans in, this area.
 2. As you .-.ay,know, we clacted not to continue the SRI
 research p7oJoct because of its substantial cost and because
 of the generally no-ative findings in the physiological por-
 tion of t-he Tesearch. For exanple, a proinishig earlier cor-
 relation botween brain wave Patterns and the on-off status
 of a hidden lioht inside a screen roon was not substamti"-ted
 by the most recent study. The operationally oriented portion
 of the SIRI work did yield sotie very interesting findings,
 Unfortunately, these were onten to question ',)cc"-use of pro-
 cedural shortcoind-nas, such as tile lac],- of controls, lack of
 predo terymined criteria foT failure, to follow accepted
 double blind methodology, and V.ho involvement of experimental
 tezzrn nembers. t1L-&cr_,se1vas as subjocts.
 3. We do agree that the field requires close observation,
 however, until lie can id,-ntify promising and potentially use-
 ful research alternatives. We have progranmad a significant
 survey project for FY-77 and a follow-on for FY-78. The
 FY-77 wor% will includo an in-depth f. the recent
 litcrature, togethor vith visits to laboTatories doing sig-
 nificant research in the fiold. The contractor %ii1l be a
 reputable scientist who holds licither a position of flat
 rojection nor an autright esponsal of paranorrilal plicnomena
