Approved For Release 2003/06/24,-CIA-RDP79-00999AQ,00300100003-8 9 July 1976 MFI40RANDUM FOR: Director for Office of Technical Service SUBJECT : Developments in Parapsychology Several developments in parapsychology have occurrad which may come to the attention of the DCI and/or DDS&T. Perhaps we should offer background briefings before they are requested. 1. Our former principal investigators, k1r. Targ cad Dr. Puthoff from Stanford Research Institute (SRI), ars writing a book about their research. The book is writt-.n in a popular style and could be a best seller. I have. reviewed the manuscript and suggested some modifications which were accepted. Nevertheless, if the book is believed, the intelligence utility of the claimed paranormal abilities is so obvious that I predict inundation of freedom of ialfor- mation requests concerning the intelligence communities involvement in this arca. Perhaps some thought for a T--- sponse should be given before the ton day FOI Yesponse deadline is upon us. 2. The Navy has successfuly reproduced some of our paranormal EEIG work according to SRI. I cannot verify t-he quality of the reproduction as yet but the Navy did attempt to increase the funding at SRI. This increase caused r-,- view with the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for R&D. "lly name came up and I was questioned by fir. Sam Kaslov, an R&D staff member, concerning the integrity of the SRI inveSti- gations. The Navy was worried about publicity. I reviewed our program and my experiences with Dr. Kuslov. I'he Navy's Secretary for R&D has subsequently canceled the follow-on. 3. The Foreign Technology Division at Wright-Patterson AFB, has contracted ($100K) with SRI to continue the re@,itote viewing work. They expect to apply the technique to viewing Soviet missile silos. The initial analogue tests have gone tispectacularly well" according to Dale Craff, the Air Force project monitor. These results have been reviewed in DIA SG1A Approved For Release 2003/06/24-1 CIA- AP79-0099AA000-1001 MOM A_i Approved For Release 2003/06/24,: CIA-RDP79-00999AO00300100003-8 and, I assume they will eventually be heard about some- where in community meetings or. shared with the communit'%'r staff. Perhaps someone on the IC staf d be made aware of these programs. (Suggestion: the SG1 lows former DD/ORD is on the IC staff and kr some or the CIA involvement already. lie could be made aware of the total spectrum of activities and handle any interaction-7 in the IC staff.)
