SRI-I final report, "DATA BASE MANAGEMENT", dated December 1984. b. IACPA-F-SD MFR, "Trip Report, SRI, 6-11 May, 1984" dated 14 May 1984. 1. (U) Ref a is a report on the Data Base Management System (DBMS) which has been placed into use for the purpose of analyzing the results of training and experimentation conducted at SRI-I . This DBMS is system-dependant on the SUN system which is installed at SRI-I, but is programmed in "C" language, for UNIX compatibility (to make it transferrable to other systems which can use UNIX and understand the "C" language). 2. (S/NOFORN) The report itself is little more than a laundry list of the hard- and software which SRI-I has put together to form the system. It also includes paragraphs which explain the purposes of the three main databases relating to psychoenergetics, and gives a table showing names of other databases, as well. These others, include ersonnel SG1A identification, bibliography references, and bulk data on the Mobius Society's psychological and psi testing in OMNI magazine (PSIQI and PSIQII). The interview SG1J between Dr. Ed May and (ref. b) indicates that the system is also use or ot er non-CENTER LANE or psychoenergetics related work. 3. (S/NOFORN) The report was a result of tasking by DIA, not by INSCOM. We were evidently provided a courtesy copy because Of our relationship to their psychoenergetics effort. The system has I i t t I e ,if any, relationship to our operational database requirements, in terms of form, content, or format. 4. (C/NOFORN) Since the office system used by CENTER LANE does not have telecommunications capabilities, we cannot directly access or interact with SRI's equipment, and cannot therefore directly access any information in their database. However, in the above mentioned interview (ref. b), Dr. May did state that he would provide any information from the SRI-I database system, if it were properly requested, giving specific data required, and the proper format for our needs. No such request has been necessary to date. I UNCLASSIFIED Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CIA-RDP96-00788ROO1800250001-6 Approved For Release 20009FeRtJY-RDP96-00788R001 800250001-6 II Introduction (U) (S/NF) Data-base management was introduced to the psychoenergetic project at SRI International during FY 1979. During that time, a number of data bases were developed in support of DoD requirements (a full description may be found elsewhere).* The computer on which the data bases were installed was an LSI-11/23 running UNIXt as its operating software, and INFORMIX as its data-base management system (DBMS). It became obvious at the end of FY 1983, that the data-base system had reached its design limitations and could no longer meet the project demands. During the period of this current task, it was decided to expand the computer system by upgrading the data-base management system to state of the art. This report describes the computer system that was purchased, the data- base management system that was installed, the supporting publication software, and a new data base that was not included in the above reference. *(U) E. The system is based on a workstation concept--each user has a complete computer at their desk. This computer is connected by a high-speed link to other similar ones in a network. This architecture provides three distinct advantages over earlier ones: 0 Users do not interfere with each other regardless of the size and complexity of their programs. Users may interact and share programs with ease. The cost per computing power is low, and expansion is cost effective and technically easy to accomplish. A. Two of the most common are data-base management and word/text processing. Within the latter, there is a wide variety of programs--ranging from simple text formatting to complete publications packages. (U) The psychoenergetic project's system has four commercial-application packages: ~ INGRES--Data-base Management, Relational Technology, Inc. ~ OPS-Office Publication System, Interleaf, Inc. ~ XEDII--ASCII Word/Text Processing, Computer Methods, Ltd. ~ UNIX I STAT--Statistical Mathematical Calculator, Bell Laboratories. 5 UNCLASSIFIED Approved For Release 2000108/08 : CIA-RDP96-00788ROO1800250001-6 2. We wish to determine the degree to which a computer can be used as an aid in the solution to that problem. The first of these is a code named SEARCH. This program displays an empty square region that is divided into a 20-by-20 grid (the grid is not visible in the display). In one version of SEARCH, a target square is generated randomly and its location is fixed throughout the trial. An RVer then attempts to locate the target square using a graphics-pointing device (mouse). Another version of SEARCH is much like the first one, however, the target square is moving at a rate of one move per ms. Both versions maintain and store appropriate statistics. (S/NF) A second search-type application program is called computer assisted search (CAS). This experiment is the computer analogue of Associational Remote Viewing (ARV). A simple display consisting of a small square is shown to the RVer. The RVer is then told that all possible answers to the "question of the day" are sliding under the displayed square at a rate of one per ms, and that they should press a button on the mouse when the "correct" answer is momentarily under the square. For example, a Government official was kidnapped in Lebanon; we used this technique in an attempt to find him. The description of that effort can be found elsewhere, but, briefly, a map of Lebanon was divided into 20 areas. The Numbers I through 21 were cycled under the display square. Numbers I through 20 were associated with the map regions indicated by those labels, while Number 21 represented the "none-of-the-above" option. This kind of CAS is under continuing investigation. (U) The final type of application programs are the general utility codes not found with the overall UNIX system. These codes consist of short programs that perform various mathematical calculations, and that provide simple user interfaces to some of the more complex UNIX functions. The graphics utilities simply display the results of curve fitting and calculation utilities. 8 SECRET Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CIA-RDP96-00788ROO1800250001-6 Approved For ReleasU?ff/E8Arj:.qf,[ED6-00788ROO1800250001-6 IV Data Bases (U) (U) Since FY 1979 we have been using a number of different data bases.
