It is 2,850 ft above sea level where the river is crossed by an outcrop of Tertiary basalt. The river falls abruptly, with a great roar and in a cloud of spray, over the edge of a chasm. The native Makololu name, mosi-oa-tunya, means "the smoke that thunders". Between Livingston and Cataract islands are the Main falls, 355 ft deep. The chasm varies in width fro 80 to 200 feet. The Zambesi subsequently passes through a series of narrow zigzag gorges. David Livingston discovered and named the falls on November 16th, 1855. Immediately below them, a 650 ft rail and road bridge was opened in 1904. The township of Livingston, Northern Rhodesia, is seven miles north. The falls have become a tourist attraction, and a hydroelectric station, unobtrusively sited downstream, was opened in 1938. Approved For Release 2000/08/08 : CIA-RDP96-00789RO01 500400001 -1
