The city occupies an enclave of 7.5 square miles on the coastline of Morocco, at the Mediterranean entrance to the Straight of Gibraltar, Ceuta is the closest African Port to Europe. The city stands on a narrow peninsula that, runs East-West and is dominated by Mt. Acho (636 ft). Mt. Acho is probably ancient Mt. Abila (Abyla) which according to tradition constituted ~7ith Gibraltar the classical "Pillars of Hercules". Ceuta's arabic name is Sabta, probably derived from the name of the roman colony on the peninsula. Ad Septem Fratres (Seven Brothers) so called from the seven hills rising there in a group. Little remains of the old part of the city on the western side of the peninsula. The modern town lies to the east on the slopes of Almina, Shipping is the major industry followed by fishing and food processing.
