The more recent Jason Project teams fiber optics and imaging with robotics in an effort to make eart-D. BallarT_s", dream of "'telepres- ence " - the use of telecommunica- tions technology to create a simu- lated presence at a remote site - a reality. The Woods Hole researchers, in- cluding Ballard and Project Manager Andy Bower!! developed a fiber optic cable to transmit both data from sen- sors and television images. A 4000- meter cable was built and special shipboard handling systems were devised to prevent the fiber cable from kinking and causing distortion in the television image.
